Diesel Forklifts Versus Electric Forklifts
Forklifts are powered one of two ways, either by electric motor or by internal combustion (IC) motor. Electric forklifts are best for use indoors and cost much less to operate. IC machinery are suitable for use outdoors and are faster to refuel.
Electric Forklifts
Electric lifts produce no exhaust, that makes them the machine of choice for indoor use where the quality of air is a concern. Electric forklifts are quiet and clean. They are 20% to 40% more expensive to buy than IC lifts, but the operating cost of electric models on a per hour basis is a lot lower. The disadvantage is that batteries require 16 hours to charge and cool down, so purchasing an extra set of batteries is recommended. Electric lifts are not limited for use indoors, but when used outdoors they must be used cautiously.
Diesel Forklifts
Internal Combustion forklifts are for outdoor applications, and their carrying capacity is higher than electric forklifts. If your fleet usually operates on one kind of fuel, it might be a wise idea to purchase an IC unit that utilizes the same fuel. They could run on diesel, gas or propane. Diesel is the most economical. IC forklifts have the advantage of being easy to refuel and cheaper to operate; nonetheless, their operating cost on a per hour basis is higher. Nearly all IC models cannot be used indoors.
Other Types of Forklifts
Narrow-aisle electric forklifts are suitable for tight spaces in warehouses. They are constructed to pick up loads without having to position the lift facing the stacks. Rough terrain diesel forklifts have big tires for running on difficult surfaces.
