Parts of a Tower Crane
Several of the most remarkable structures throughout the globe are made utilizing cranes. The newer cranes are designed to be able to reach higher heights. Tower cranes offer the means to transport and lift building parts, supplies and tools around a construction site. There are several different parts that assemble a tower crane when they are put together. Putting a tower crane together uses various pieces of construction machinery.

Base
The tower crane base is typically made from a steel unit. The units' base attaches to a custom pad made of concrete. This set-up gives the structure stability. Generally, the construction has to be engineered and constructed well so as to operate at optimum safety.

Mast
The tower crane's mast provides the machine with its overall height. The mast is built out of individual steel sections which are connected together. The amount of sections determines the crane's height. Normally, a tower crane has a design that allows the mast to grow during construction by adding more parts as the building process continues. This way the height of the crane can be specified, making certain that it has enough height to carry out the required work safely and efficiently.

Slewing Unit/Top Climber
Over the mast is the slewing unit. It houses the motor and machines which allows the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of equipment that allows the mast to grow. The top climber is located just beneath the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams inside the top climber allow the slewing unit to be detached from the mast by raising it higher.

Boom
"Boom" is a term which specifically refers to the working arm of a tower crane. The boom is made of steel parts connected together, that extend out from the top of the slewing unit, parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the underside which can extend the length of the boom. This trolley has the hoisting device.
